DCYD Statement on Independent Redistricting Commission

Statement on Redistricting Committee Graphic

POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK – JUNE 29, 2021 – Last year, the voters of Dutchess County overwhelmingly voted in favor of creating an independent reapportionment (redistricting) commission dedicated to redrawing the county’s legislative districts; making sure that an elected official is appropriately and accurately representing those who call their respective towns, villages, and hamlets home. This task is bipartisan and necessary after each census. Both the current Democratic Minority and Republican Majority agreed and let the voters decide.

Unfortunately, as they have done time and time again, the Republican conference – using outdated and unfounded complaints to “dissolve” this commission – has shown their complete disregard for legitimate leadership and willingness to indulge in voter suppression tactics. Not unlike their national counterparts, their efforts to consolidate power while ignoring the desire of the people is profound and is not productive in making Dutchess County truly equitable. For such, it is an act most shameful and despicably undemocratic.

The Dutchess County Young Democrats strongly oppose this preposterous action by the County GOP to dissolve this commission and urge members of the community to speak up and let their voices be heard. We all voted for this commission and it’s time the 15 Republican Legislators got on board. Like it or not, the people of Dutchess County have spoken and it’s time that they begin to listen to us rather than to their special interests or Trumpistic party.

I am calling on our Dutchess County Young Democrats, County Democrats, and all registered voters in Dutchess County, to voice your opposition to the dismantling of this necessary commission. If not for the accurate representation in our Legislature, do it to uphold our democracy. When a majority agrees, it should not be left to a small few to decide whether or not to follow the will of the people. We urge you to voice your concern with your county legislator, especially those in Republican control.
